How to find size of iCloud library?

Post by mwarner »

Pardon the simple question, but how do I calculate the size of my BookEnds application library folder that syncs to my iCloud drive?

I don't know, exactly. I believe it's smaller than the library file on your HD, but by how much on average I don't know. I can ask Serge about that.

It's not obvious how one can determine this accurately. But empirically, this might get you close.

On the Mac, go to Settings -> Account Storage Manage button -> Bookends to see the total amount used (MB or GB).

Then go to iCloud Drive in the Finder and do a Get Info on the Bookends folder with icon to see how much is devoted to PDFs.

Subtract the latter from the former, and at least in my case it's not too dissimilar to what the library file in the Finder uses.

If anyone else has a better idea, please chime in.

Get info on the Bookends folder in iCloud Drive is not available directly on the Mac or when I am logged into iCloud drive on the web portal. This is what started this rabbit hole for me, as I wanted to know how much storage the PDF library was taking up. However, if I open that folder, select all PDFs in there and then Get info will tell me the GB I have there. Thanks for feedback.

Really? In the Finder window I click on iCloud Drive in the left sidebar, then click on the special Bookends folder (the one with the Bookends image), then press Command-I (Get Info -- or right-click and select that command). The resulting dialog includes the size. At least for me, using macOS 14.5.

In any case, I'm glad you found a workaround that gives you the answer.
