Bookends 9.0.6

Post by thecritic »

Jon,

Thanks for such a wonderful update that adds many requested features-- and who thought it would come so soon? I'm thrilled by the file proxy icon! However, I have a couple of questions about OpenURL:

1. What about superscripts in titles (such as XVIII^e) that have been replaced by a carat symbol? Can those get automatically retranslated to something like "XVIIIe"?

2. Do acccented european characters in titles need to be translated somehow? (I'm not sure, I'm trying to get the new OpenURL feature working with our library's server right now)

I hadn't considered that possibility. Bookends may have to strip out these characters before sending the information to the OpenURL server.

I suspect that will be server-dependent. In one example I tried, a 'b' was adequate to find what in the original title was a beta.

I don't want to appear ungrateful -- Bookends 9.0.6 is a wonderful achievement -- but is there a possibility that superscripts/subscripts could be handled directly (i.e. not escaped) one day?

It's conceivable. But it would involve ripping out and replacing the entire text engine. Since Bookends saves styled text with true superscript/subscript, it really is mostly a cosmetic issue, and there are more important issues we are working on at the moment.

Not sure what you mean. If I paste text with superscripts from Word into a Title field in Bookends, that superscript will be preserved internally? It doesn't appear in "View Formatted."

Other way around: Bookends -> word processor.
