Re: Bookends freeze after changing external displays on Macb
My Macbook Pro system does not display the spinning beach ball or the fan noise, but otherwise the response to unplugging my external monitor is exactly as described by macula here. Bookends simply freezes and I have to force-quit the program. About 3 times out of 5, this also means I have to rebuil...

Re: Bookends freeze after changing external displays on Macbook
It's worth noting that Bookends is not the only application that suffers from problems related to attaching/detaching an external display to a Macbook Pro. When I switch displays, Microsoft Word will sometimes reduce all my windows to 3-inch-wide rectangles, which I cannot enlarge with any of the us...

Re: Using Google Scholar search with library proxy
Hmmm - I worked on this for 10 minutes but couldn't quite figure it out. If I do a search in Bookends' Google Scholar option, when I doubleclick a result I get the article's web page alright, but since the URL is not through the library proxy, I am generally asked to pay for the article. So I have t...

Re: Using Google Scholar search with library proxy
Hi, Why not create a bookmark with this URL in Bookends? Then, using Bookends browser, select the bookmark and do your searching within Bookends browser and download pdfs by drag and drop. This is a step in the right direction, for sure. But it looks like I still have to do two searches: one to get...

Using Google Scholar search with library proxy
Hi Jon - I've discovered that if I use the following URL: http://scholar.google.com.proxy.lib.umich.edu/ I can get search results from Google Scholar through our library proxy. Any result for something our library subscribes to is then available for download (after login). This saves several steps, ...

Bookends freeze after changing external displays on Macbook
Posting this to the forum in hopes another user might have some help for me, since Jon hasn't been able to figure it out: For the last 6 months, I've experienced the following problem intermittently on a Macbook Pro. I frequently move between locations. I put the Macbook to sleep, disconnect the ext...

Exporting Bookends' unique ID field to Endnote X2
Hi Jon - I'm forced to export Bookends bilbiographies back to Endnote X2 in order to collaborate with a workgroup. When I do this, Endnote X2 receives the record number from Bookends, but it does not appear to receive the Unique ID field. This means that I can't use my existing in-text citations (fo...

Re: Word 2008 Scan and Unscan
FYI, I have just experienced an identical problem. Attempting to scan a long document with many images, captions, and cross-references, Word crashes during Bookends "unscanning document" phase. If I restart and repeat the process several times, other apps begin to fail as well, until the w...

Web of Science via my library - how?
Hi - the Bookends user manual says I can access WOS through my library, but I can't seem to make it work. I'm asked to enter the URL, which I assume is the URL that appears in my browser when I log in to WOS through the library. It looks like this: apps.isiknowledge.com.proxy.lib.umich.edu/UA_Genera...

A better Google Scholar filter?
I use Google Scholar to find articles. The new Google Scholar search in Bookends 10.3 is a fantastic addition, but the filter doesn't do what I need it to do. It seems to only import the author, article and journal title, year, URL, and DOI. I need volume/issue number and pages as well, and I'd like...

Book chapters
Thanks Jon. I'm dealing with chapters from edited books. I've now tried this import process several times, using both EN7 XML and EN8 XML export, and every time the book title goes into the Bookends serial title field. To be entirely clear: in EN8 this reference type is called a "book section,&...

Endnote 8 XML to Bookends -- problems with filter
Hi - I'm converting from Endnote 8 and having some problems with the import process. Exporting in XML generally works better, but there seem to be some errors in mapping Endnote fields. In particular, with book chapters, the title of the edited book gets put into the Bookends Serial Title field. I'm...
