Installed new Bookends download: still have 9.0.1.

Hi,
I just downloaded from http://www.sonnysoftware.com/download.html what I thought to be Bookends 9.0.6 or something like that. I dragged it to my harddrive (he asked me if I want to overwrite the elder version and I said "yes").
Then I open Bookends and it is still 9.0.1
I restarted the Mac ... and it is still 9.0.1
What else do I have to do?

Sounds like you still have a copy of 9.0.1 on your Mac. Do a search in the Finder for "Bookends" and see...

If "Bookends Folder 20.1.2006" means it was created January 20, 2006, then the old version you are running is probably there. I don't know exactly what you are asking for -- if you are launching Bookends 9.0.1, then you must have a copy, no? Find it and remove it.

I'm not launching Bookends 9.0.1 explicitly but I launch Bookends as always.
After downloading the new version I dragged it to my Harddisc-Symbol (as told by the installation process). Obviously it did not move to my Program-Folder on my harddisc (and did not overwrite there the old version). On the other hand, the downloaded stuff vanished.
I will repeat the whole process.

Here is what I did in my second try:
1) download from http://www.sonnysoftware.com/download.html
Bookends for Mac OS X 10.3 or later (15.8 MB)
2) I received Bookends.dmg.zip and it unzipped automatically to Bookends 15,7 MB
3) Then the FINDER showed me three items
<- Drag to Applications Folder on your hard drive
Bookends Folder
Installation Warning!
4) I dragged the Bookends Folder on my hard drive
5) He asked me if I wanted to overwrite
6) I told him: Do it for god's sake
7) He copied a couple of datasets
eight) I started Bookends as usually
9) It still is 9.0.1
In which step do I fail?

We should probably move this thread to direct tech support. But the first thing you can tell me in the email (to support@sonnysoftware.com) is why you think it is still 9.0.1 (what does the About Bookends dialog box say, for example)?

I just found the mistake, but now it's even worse.
When dragging on my harddrive he does not overwrite the Program/Bookends-Folder; instead he places the stuff at the same level as Program.
That's why the Bookends-installation was undisturbed.
Now I dragged he Bookends-folder into the Program-Folder.
He again asked if to overwrite.
I told him: do it.
I started Bookends.
He didn't open the last opened database but gave me the collection of databases.
So I told him which one to open.
Bookends wrote: Database Engine Error: Database version is "512". But the current version is "560".
Now, the version finally is 9.0.6 but I can't open my databases anymore.

Herbert, I guess you now know what happened: you dragged your folder to your the root level of your harddrive (that is, directly on your Macintosh HD icon or whatever name you gave your Harddisk or "Festplatte"). However, the intention is to drag it into the /Applications folder (in your case probably called "Programme").

It asked you if it should overwrite your old Bookends folder, because you already dropped older folders to the root level of your hard drive â€“ instead of dropping them into your Applications folder.

I would recommend that you delete the Bookends folder that is located at the root level of your hard drive since you don't need it â€“ all applications that you download should be put into the Applications (Programme) folder. They must not be put there, but it is better for many reasons.

Perhaps you should also take a look if there are other folders/programs that you may have accidentally dropped there and that could be deleted (However, be very careful to _not_ delete the folders called "Programme", "Library", "System", and "Benutzer"!)

Jon, perhaps it would be a good idea to make your installation image look similar to other images that are distributed nowadays and that include an alias to the Applications folder so that the chances of people accidentally dropping the Bookends folder to the wrong location are smaller?

Your advice to Jon is good. I always rely on two ways: either a software process is really fool-proofed (I follow the instructions blindly, like in this case) or I have to read a manual first; that's OK too, but somebody has to tell me in advance.
In this case it was not really fool-proofed. I have no programs (at least not on purpose) at the highest level on my disc. The move on the correct Bookends-folder solved the problem in so far as I now have 9.0.6. It just doesn't open my databases anymore (but we're discussing that offline per email). Thanks again.

Actually, the intructions tell you to move the Bookends folder the the Applications Folder on your hard drive, which is exactly correct. Adding an alias to the Applications folder is not a bad idea, but it won't prevent you from doing what you did.
