Metatypes

I'm sorry, but I just cannot get my head around metatypes. In a custom format, I have a Book Chapter type, and I have an Edited Book type. Both of these appear correctly when citing a reference of either of these types. Next I define a relationship between a Book Chapter reference and an Edited Book...

Re: Custom formats not appearing in Formats Manager

That did the trick -- many thanks! An earlier bug(?) that I experienced before, possibly somewhat related to this, was the Formats Manager refusing to load properly owing to incorrectly set file write permissions. (Running OS X 10.6.3 -- I've had a few of these problems under Snow Leopard where thin...

Custom formats not appearing in Formats Manager

Having recently upgraded to Bookends 11(.0.4), I'm experiencing a problem where my custom formats are not appearing in the Formats Manager. They *are* appearing under the Default Format > menu option, and the formatting pane is showing the relevant format. They also appear in the Print References......

Groups issue

I just experienced some weird issues with groups (running BE 10.1.1 on OS X 10.5.1). I have 9 folders, with a series of static groups inside - each containing anything from 3 to around 150 references. I was renaming, using colons and dashes, titles not that long, and moving static groups into existi...

So when you merge a database, the numbers actually change?

No point using these numbers to tie with paper copies then, I guess.... thanks for the useful responses.

Unique ID #s

I was just wondering what other Bookends users actually do with Unique ID #s on references in the database. I have briefly entertained the idea of going through my files of paper articles and annotating them with these ID #s. Would there be any benefit to this? If I lost my entire Bookends database,...

Just to add my 2p to this thread. I write on film and (speaking personally) there is no way I would rely on the information from Amazon to maintain my reference database.

But maybe that's just me!

Drag and drop in 9.2 / 9.2.1

I've come back to using Bookends after a couple of months; after installing 9.2, I seem unable to drag and drop references like I used to - either into static groups, or cross-application into Mellel documents. Upgrading to 9.2.1, trashing the plist, creating a new database or rebuilding the old one...

How would that work? It seems to me you'd have to either create a new Primary and Secondary Type, or use some identifier in a user-defined field that would let Bookends distinguish between them. An identifier in a user-defined field, or the ability for Bookends to acknowledge static groups when cre...

I'd like to add my voice to those requesting such a feature. The differentiation between not simply subjects or keywords but also primary and secondary sources would be beyond useful for a lot of people.

Titles and case in general

I agree with the suggestion for a modifier to bypass title case in particular circumstances (eg non-English titles). This may also solve the problem I am having with this situation: For me, usually, in a title, the words 'the' or 'a' ought to remain in lower case. After a colon, however, they should...

Thanks, Jon. It would be really great if that feature turns up someday. Keep up the good work!

You could create a reference entry with a new Type (maybe "Cite No Author" or something) and then cite it this way: Thanks, Jon, for your quick response. I thought about that - but (a) would it not result in a duplicate entry in the bibliography? and (b) it seems like a rather inelegant w...
