Re: Error while searching: "File does not begin with '%PDF-'"

Fair enough. Turning off the PDF viewing at the bottom does make the problem go away. My problem is that this is how I *want* to use Bookends. Is there any way to overcome the framework error from your end or do I have to put up with it? The ability to see inline PDFs in this view is very valuable t...

Error while searching: "File does not begin with '%PDF-'"

Hi Jon, Recently, when searching in Bookends' main window, I start to type a word, Bookends 'stalls' and shows nothing in the search box, then ultimately misses a couple of letters I had typed and displays the following dialog box error: "File does not begin with '%PDF-'". Any ideas what t...

Re: Wrong ordering of references in scanned document

Wow, how strange is that. The document is actually fine on my Mac (5-8), but when I open it on a Windows computer, the order is 8-5. Any thoughts?

Wrong ordering of references in scanned document

Jon, I have an issue when scanning a document. I have four references together in my master document, with one set of brace brackets {} and four non-ambiguous references in it separated by a semi-colon. The document scans fine, but in the resultant new document, the order of the references is "...

Any update on this? There are several people posting on macintouch today about EN problems with Word 2008 wanting to know if any other software gets along nicely.

Now that it is release, anyone know if Bookends plays nicely with Word 2008?

Unfortunately, when I try to either Repair or Rebuild (either with or without retaining user settings), I get the same errors "SQL error: line 1:59: unexpected token".

How can I get out of this loop?

Thanks!

All kinds of errors! Trying to show date reference added

Jon, I was trying to get Bookends to show when I added references, so I went Preferences, Lists, and changed on of the four PMID fields to Added. Uh oh. Now I get all kinds of dialogs with errors, such as "Field name 'authorEditorSortMethod' is not unique", and then I get an SQL dialog box...

I suppose this could be dealt with by including warnings in a dialog box before any deletions occur that reminds the user that other databases may indeed be linking to the presumed orphaned PDFs. For those with only one database, this would be a useful feature, and I guess for those who don't they'd...

Suggestion: "Clean-up" of Attachments folder

Jon,

I have quite a few orphaned PDFs in my Attachments folder, from refs that I've deleted but whose PDFs were left behind.

Is it possible for Bookends to scan the folder and delete those PDFs that are not linked to any of the refs within Bookends?

Let me know what you think of this idea.

Well, I've solved the problem. There was some sort of hidden text, because when I deleted the entire reference (including the brace brackets) and scanned it, the reference *still* showed up! Therefore I turned on "show all markings" in Word, which I suspected would show me some hidden text...

Unfortunately not. I tried every permutation of deleting the period, bracket, and even scanning using a different journal to see if that was the issue, but it still is the same!

Would it be useful for me to send you my word file? Thanks Jon.

Duplicate reference in text after scanning

Jon, A strange problem I had yesterday while finalizing a manuscript. Written in Word, scanned using toolbar, no problems with the rest of the document except one part that has a duplicate reference in the main body text. The "raw" text in Word is: This could unto itself lead to better cli...

Hi, I actually didn't know you could drag and drop the file - very handy! Obviously for me (using Mail) I would prefer a one-step process, but only if it doesn't make it more difficult for others. I hope others chime in with their thoughts, but until then, thanks for an acceptable solution and the q...

Congrats Jon

Wow. The UI for Bookends (which I have admittedly complained about in the past as being "non-Cocoa'ish") is vastly superior compared to when I started using Bookends a couple of years ago. Looks really nice. My favourite features now are seeing attachments in-line, and having the yellow ba...

Well, that worked. Not exactly convenient to have to trash my preferences, but not a big deal I guess. I wonder why it wouldn't "stick" in the Bookends Prefs file? All of my other settings did, including the size of other windows, just not the Internet Search window.... Perplexing. Thanks ...
